Lampreda (Italian for Lamprey) is a noisy beast, spawning sounds that are as visceral, winding and gory as the offal devoured in Florence’s working-class districts. The project aims to broaden the sonic possibilities of the drum kit, by means of electricity and amplification. Thanks to a set of DIY microphones, the vibrations produced by drums and cymbals are filtered through an analog mixer, and released via a broken amplifier. This way, percussions generate distortions and other electronic effects, just like an electric guitar would do. Everything is played live, with no overdubs, triggers, or support from other sound sources. Even feedbacks and drones are exclusively produced by manipulating the drums. This five-tracks debut EP is a long percussive ritual, celebrating both ancestral memories and urban influences. Lampreda pillages traditions from all over the world, mixing African polyrhythms with Japanese and Indonesian folk music. The legacy of industrial culture, the lesson of avant-garde and the passion for unpolished techno merge into each other, giving birth to an odd sonic behemoth that hides multiple shades of sound under its monolithic surface.
