Caveiras deal in obsessive rhythms and low frequencies, infusing punk with Afro-Brazilian vibes. Their spiritual birth can be traced back to a visit to Favela Rocinha: while watching two young boys improvise a batucada with a bucket and a bin, band members became obsessed with the possibility of an occult alliance between Rio de Janeiro and Einstürzende Neubauten’s Berlin. Back home, Caveiras made a blood oath, vowing to channel the dark side of samba. Armed with an electric bass, scrap percussion and a machine-gunning sampler, they began to butcher Brazilian standards with a wild and iconoclastic attitude. Songs are dismembered, contaminated and reassembled, in a continuous cultural short circuit: claves and rhythms of the Brazilian tradition are heavily treated through electro-acoustic techniques, dub-oriented bass lines strip melody down to the bone, while screams cross the line separating punk’s rants from Quimbanda’s curses. Cidade Oculta (a title that pays homage to the film noir by the same name, directed by Chico Botelho in 1986) is a night raid through the less traveled regions of Brazil’s metropolis, such as the favelas overlooking Ipanema Beach or the alleys of the Boca do Lixo district. These areas offer shelter to a marginal community, representing a largely ignored portion of Brazil. A Brazil that is violent, yet extremely vital. A Brazil that exists behind and beyond those postcard images of tanned bodies, carnival parties and caipirinhas. These are the alleys that make up the Conceived City.

I Caveiras trafficano illegalmente in ritmi ossessivi e basse frequenze, mirando a infiltrare vibrazioni afro-brasiliane dietro le linee del punk. Nascono spiritualmente durante un pellegrinaggio a Rocinha: dopo aver osservato due ragazzini improvvisare una batucada con un secchio e un bidone, realizzano che la distanza fra Rio De Janeiro e la Berlino degli Einstürzende Neubauten è solo apparentemente incolmabile. Tornati in patria, i nostri stringono un patto di sangue e si ripromettono di mostrare al mondo il lato oscuro del samba. Servendosi di basso elettrico, percussioni di scarto e campionamenti alla stregua di armi semi-automatiche, cominciano a brutalizzare la tradizione brasiliana con impeto selvaggio e iconoclasta. I brani vengono smembrati, contaminati e ricomposti in un cortocircuito culturale continuo: claves e standard ritmici subiscono trattamenti elettro-acustici al limite dell’industrial, il basso di estrazione dub riduce l’impalcatura melodica ai minimi termini, mentre le urla creano un ponte tra l’invettiva punk e le maledizioni Quimbanda. Cidade Oculta (titolo che omaggia l’omonima pellicola di Chico Botelho, manifesto noir brasiliano di metà anni ’80) si pone quindi come una scorribanda notturna attraverso le aree meno battute delle metropoli brasiliane, dalle favelas che sovrastano la spiaggia di Ipanema ai vicoli della Boca do Lixo. Questi sono i luoghi che offrono rifugio a una comunità marginale, rappresentativa di un Brasile altro. Un Brasile violento, eppure estremamente vitale. Un Brasile che reclama legittimazione al pari delle immagini da cartolina fatte di corpi abbronzati, carnevale e caipirinhas. Questi sono i luoghi che ospitano la Città Occulta.
